How much does block paving cost?
Block paving is priced by area, and the sub-base matters as much as the blocks. Enter the area below for a region-adjusted estimate.
What block paving involves
- 1Excavate and sub-base
Dig out to depth, then lay and compact a type-1 sub-base with falls for drainage — the foundation that stops rutting and sinking.
- 2Edging and laying course
Fixed edge restraints hold the blocks in, over a screeded laying course of sharp sand.
- 3Lay, cut and joint
Blocks are laid to the pattern, cut at edges, compacted and jointed with kiln-dried sand.
Block paving is the default driveway finish for good reason — durable, repairable and smart. Keep it permeable to sidestep planning issues, and remember the cost lives in the excavation and sub-base, not the blocks themselves.
Block paving costs (indicative, installed)
| Scope | Basis | Indicative cost |
|---|---|---|
| Standard concrete blocks | per m² | £70 – £130/m² |
| Permeable / premium | per m² | £100 – £160/m² |
| Typical 40 m² driveway | — | £2,800 – £6,400 |
| Excavation & sub-base | the critical part | included above |
The sub-base and edging are the bulk of the labour and the key to a lasting surface. Permeable paving helps avoid planning.
Frequently asked questions
How much does block paving cost per square metre?+
Block paving typically costs £70–£130 per m² for standard concrete blocks, or £100–£160 for permeable and premium blocks — including excavation, sub-base and edging. A 40 m² driveway is roughly £2,800–£6,400.
Is block paving cheaper than resin?+
Standard block paving is usually a little cheaper than resin-bound per m², and it's easy to lift and repair. Resin is faster to lay and inherently permeable. Both need a solid sub-base.
